The present American version of Father’s Day, like Mother’s Day, has a long history that extends beyond greeting cards.
On July 5, 1908, hundreds of men perished in the deadliest mining tragedy in US history, and the first documented Father’s Day ceremony was held in Fairmont, West Virginia.
Grace Golden Clayton, the daughter of a devout preacher, was instrumental in bringing the Sunday service to fruition.
Mrs. Clayton wanted to memorialize the numerous dads who had perished in the mine disaster, which killed over 360 men and boys and left approximately 1,000 children fatherless, while missing her own father, who had died in 1896.
Despite the fact that the Fairmont ceremony was the first to commemorate dads, it did not become an annual event, nor was the concept pushed a large July 4 celebration in Fairmont and a tragic young death from typhoid fever took over the news at the time.

Father’s Day 2022 History
Father’s Day was instigated by a lady called Sonora Smart Doss, who was reared with her five other siblings by their father.
To acknowledge her father’s work in raising her and her siblings, Doss wanted to develop a day exactly like Mother’s Day to thank her father.
The first formal Father’s Day was observed on June 18, 1972. Since then the day that occurs on the third Sunday of June is commemorated as Father’s Day each year.
Despite the fact that the occurrence caused Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Calvin Coolidge to call for a day for fathers during their administrations, it was not an official holiday.
Unfortunately, the celebration’s exuberance did not endure long. People attempted to abolish both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day in the 1920s and 1930s, replacing them with Parents’ Day.
Then, during the Great Depression, shops made a concerted effort to commercialize the holiday in order to generate money in difficult economic times. As World War II began, individuals began to utilize Father’s Day as a means to honor their fathers.

Builders of life’s companionship!
Oh, I envy them, as I see them there
Under the sky in the open air,
For out of the old, old long-ago
Come the summer days that I used to know,
When I learned life’s truths from my father’s lips
As I shared the joy of his fishing-trips.
